Read Banned Books

Read the books "the man" says are dangerous. Be a rebel! Read banned books! Think dangerous thoughts!

Previous entries in this series: Between the World and Me.

A Wrinkle in Time

Illustrated cover of "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. Features flying figures, a robed figure, and a horse, against a starry background.

I was astounded to learn A Wrinkle in Time is under consideration for being banned! I'm not sure if this has happened anywhere yet, but just the thought left me bewildered. I vaguely recall reading this yarn as a child and not enjoying it. Being well aware it's considered a classic, I figured I'd best be a rebel and reread it!

Apparently, the treatment of Christianity is too subversive for children. Now, I'm not the religious type, so right out of the gate, I am skeptical of the uproar. To my mind, L'Engle uses the Judeo-Christian tradition to create a fantastical tale, much like numerous authors have used Greco-Roman mythology (and other religious traditions) for inspiration. If a delightful coming-of-age fantasy with whimsical characters and a first kiss challenges someone's faith to the point of banning the book, their faith is paper-thin indeed.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time, and I plan to read the other books in the series.
