Read Banned Books

Read the books "the man" says are dangerous. Be a rebel! Read banned books! Think dangerous thoughts!

Between the World and Me

Book cover featuring bold text: "Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me," with New York Times bestseller and award stamps. Beige background.

I picked up Between the World and Me after hearing the author interviewed on NPR, presumably because the novel is under consideration of being banned. Why? Because it makes Caucasian students feel uncomfortable.

I didn't feel uncomfortable reading the book. I'm not convinced Mr. Coates intends people to feel uncomfortable reading the book. This novel did make me think. Over the past, I don't know, five years or so, the term white privilege has appeared in the media. While I intellectually grasped the concept, I didn't truly understand on a visceral level what the lack of white privilege means for people. Mr. Coates's prose gave me an inkling of what that means, and for that, I owe him a debt.
