Book cover of "Phantom Algebra" over a cityscape. Green-tinted library with eerie hand silhouette. Moody, mysterious atmosphere.

Phantom Algebra is running rampant in the wild! Find out what Zuri must do when facing foes she can't punch.

In the Wild—Literally!

Silhouette of a person kicking on a serene beach at sunset, with vibrant purple and orange sky, and calm waters reflecting colors.

Phantom Algebra blends the grit of Fight Like a Girl with the paranormal frights of Goosebumps. Zuri Williams dreams of being a mixed martial arts fighter, and her first instinct is to problem-solve with her fists. When she attends a haunted high school in quaint Pinedale, North Carolina, she will discover that, just like gnarly algebraic equations, not all monsters can be dispatched with a high kick alone.

Blurb

Zuri and her mother settle in Pinedale, North Carolina, to start over. For years, they’ve been on the run from Zuri’s father, a retired boxer and full-time gangland enforcer.

In Pinedale, Zuri finds a gym where she can train in mixed martial arts to pursue her dream of becoming a champion fighter. At Pinedale High, she discovers friends among the outcasts, academic challenges, and something unexpected…ghosts.

When Zuri encounters a tween phantom haunting the library, her life is turned upside down and inside out as she attempts to help the spirit. This incurs the wrath of devils, living and dead. Zuri will need her martial arts prowess, heart, and the aid of friends to protect everyone she loves.

Reviews

Open book held in hand with a soccer field and players in the background at sunset, creating a calm and focused mood.

Reviews are already rolling. My overall sense is Phantom Algebra is my best reviewed novel to date. Here is my favorite form Midwest Book Review.

“Librarians can choose Phantom Algebra for their collections confident that the rich tone of emotional connection and discovery that opens the story will support the supernatural contentions and growing horror to deliver a one-two punch of surprises and revelations.”—  D. Donovan, Sr. Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

What author doesn’t want to deliver a one-two punch of surprises and revelations?

Five-stars from a reviewer on LibraryThing—hopefully, a few more of these are to come. I did a giveaway on LibraryThing back in August.

5-star book review praising a book, stating difficulty in putting it down. Mention of LibraryThing Early Reviewers and date: Sep 9, 2025.

Review of a Dan Rice book from the "Haunting of Pinedale High" series. Discusses teens, ghosts, and Zuri's unique abilities on a pink background.

Readers' Favorite also gave Zuri's tale their seal of approval.

This is an incredibly enjoyable story that hooks you and keeps you reading from start to finish, fully invested in what happens. Highly recommended reading, regardless of age.

What's Next

In the near term, I'll be back to editing volume four of The Allison Lee Chronicles. I'll have that ready for submission before the new year with a bit of good fortune. Also, work on Solarflame is on the horizon. More information on these projects and others will be shared in the coming weeks.
