Horror
Although I have written a frightful short story or two, I never considered myself a horror author…until now, I guess. Phantom Algebra is a ghost story sure to ready you and yours for Halloween without fretting about restless nights full of nightmares.
Third Person
Phantom Algebra is the first novel-length work I've managed to get published writtten in third person. My other books are first person present tense, which were fun to write, but I love the flexibility of third person to tell the story from a variety of perspectives—including those nasty villains!
Careful Planning Equals Speed
Not every author is a planner, but I've always been. Phantom Algebra is the book I adhered most closely to the outline while writing. I discovered that doing so helped me transcribe the rough draft to the digital page faster than ever before and nail my word count goal. I was surprised to find the prose was relatively clean as rough drafts go. I suspect this is due to following the plan lightening my cognitive load, allowing me to dedicate copious neurons to wordsmithing while drafting.
Tough as Nails Hero
I wanted my hero to simultaneously be able to kick butt while being ill-prepared to confront ghosts. Thus, Zuri was conceived, an amateur boxer and mixed martial artist, who dreams of one day being a world champion and only believes in what she can punch. What will Zuri do when faced with ephemeral fiends?
Blurb
Zuri and her mother settle in Pinedale, North Carolina, to start over. For years, they ve been on the run from Zuri s father, a retired boxer and full-time gangland enforcer.
In Pinedale, Zuri finds a gym where she can train in mixed martial arts to pursue her dream of becoming a champion fighter. At Pinedale High, she discovers friends among the outcasts, academic challenges, and something unexpected ghosts.
When Zuri encounters a tween phantom haunting the library, her life is turned upside down and inside out as she attempts to help the spirit. This incurs the wrath of devils, living and dead. Zuri will need her martial arts prowess, heart, and the aid of friends to protect everyone she loves.
