Writing Recommendation #5: No Cold Starts

Howdy,

Today I thought I'd share one of the best pieces of writing advice I think I’ve ever encountered. A couple of years ago I saw Jeffrey Brown interview Stephen King on the PBS News Hour. The entire interview is fascinating, here's a link. For me, at least, King drops a real pearl of wisdom at minute 9 of the video when talking about writing routines. King talks about starting his writing day by reviewing a few pages he hasn't revised yet. He sums up this habit by stating: a cold start is a hard start.

I have followed a variation of this every day since watching this interview. To avoid cold starts, I typically read through what I wrote the day before as a kickoff to my writing sessions. I think this habit has served me very well.
