Meet Ranclath, a terrestrial octopus and higher-up in the Ulthian hierarchy. He's no friend to Allison Lee and a prominent character in the fourth and final volume of The Allison Lee Chronicles, The Bane Dragons.

Character Interview: Ranclath

Where were you born?

I was born in a birthing pool under the violet skies of Ulth. I was crafty even at three months old. You see, that's when the younglings destined for food processing are harvested. I saw the shadow of the harvesting tentacles and fled to the bottom of the pool. It was a harrowing swim because many others were fleeing as well. But even then, I was stronger than most. Those I couldn't outswim, I snatched in my tentacles and propelled them toward the harvesters. Many of the strongest younglings were harvested that day due to my actions. I was brilliant! Brilliant! At six months, when we younglings engaged in mortal combat to establish the pecking order in the pool, most who might have challenged me were already eliminated.

What is your favorite color?

Pink. It is the color of the clouds on Ulth, and I love the clouds. The clouds remind me of the ink art my twenty-fourth daughter creates. Some of her work decorates my office. I receive so many compliments on her art.

What is your dream job?

Prime Administrator. It's true. I am the Administrator of Tentarum. It's a major metropolis, and I am responsible for the welfare of over thirteen million Ulthians. It's a great responsibility. A great responsibility. I don't take it lightly. Holding the office is an honor. But, I do despise moistening tentacles of the District Administrator, the Regional Administrator, the Province Administrator, and on and on. There's just so many tentacles to keep moist! I get tired of slashing water on them and following their…guidance. District Administrator Aug can't find his way to the defecation pool without having a tentacle held. Sometimes he doesn't even make it in time.

Yes, my dream is to be the Prime Administrator. Then all those nimrods would be moistening my tentacles.

What is your favorite food?

Baby Ulthian, of course. Is there any food more delectable in the multiverse? No. Nothing even comes close, and don't let those dragons, skaags, or any other faux Epicureans fool you. The best meat comes from a three-month-old, is served raw, and only seasoned by the brine of its birthing pool.

How do you spend a typical Saturday night?

The same way I spend every evening. Hours upon hours of paperwork followed by a relaxing swim in my private pool.

About the Book

Red dragon silhouette over a full moon on a starry blue background. Text: "The Bane of Dragons" by Dan Rice, "The Allison Lee Chronicles."

Monstrous forces from across the multiverse have set their eyes upon Earth to create a beachhead in the universe humanity calls home. The problem with that? Humans will be enslaved…and used as food stock for skaags, ravenous shapeshifting super soldiers.

Allison, a teenage alien human hybrid, is humanity’s only hope. She must travel the slipstream, the super highway through the multiverse, to bring the conflict to the enemy’s turf. With a crack squad of miscreants as allies, she does just that, but the plan goes awry.

They end up as the prisoners of angry terrestrial octopi. Their attempts at negotiation only see them handed over to General Bane, the skaag supreme military commander feared throughout the multiverse. Allison discovers that to save everyone she loves, she must unravel the magic binding General Bane and his kind to their overlords. To accomplish that, she must face her greatest fear, herself.
