I am familiar with Susie Black's Holly Swimsuit books, which are tongue-in-cheek mysteries. I was curious to see how her snarky protagonists and trademark humor translate into the young adult genre.
Book Review: The Case of the Croaked Coach
Susie Black is back again—this time with a young adult mystery, featuring teenage reporter Hannah White.
Those familiar with Black's Holly Swimsuit books will immediately recognize the author's wit, penchant for smart, snarky female leads, and ability to weave a captivating whodunit. These attributes translate nicely into the YA genre.
Hannah is a protagonist who appeals to young and old alike. She has enough snark to be spunky without coming across as bratty. Her cohorts are also well drawn.
There are plenty of potential perpetrators of the murder, as expected. Hannah bravely investigates them despite risking her safety.
Young readers will find this murder mystery set in high school engrossing. I think older readers looking for a nostalgia read will discover something familiar and new. Some of the language used by the narrator harkens back to an earlier era without detracting from the contemporary settings. In this way, it reminds me of The Hardy Boys. Highly recommended, especially to mystery fans, young and old.
