Writing Recommendation #4: Listen to your Writing

Howdy,

I recently finished The Secrets of Story by Matt Bird. Wow. What can I say? Scads of storytelling advice fill each page. Most his examples are movie/TV-based since he is a screenwriter, but don't let that deter you from checking it out. His advice is top-notch.

I found one bit of advice particularly intriguing, in part because it is so easy to implement. Just use your computer’s universal access capabilities to listen to your writing. It's a great way to catch typos and identify clunky sentence structure. At least, according to Mr. Bird. I didn't doubt him, but I wondered if I could stand listening to the robotic computer voice reading my writing. It turns out, I didn't mind listening to the robotic drone at all, especially when it laid bare all the typos on the page. Try it out; you won't regret it.
