Struggle with telling opposed to showing characters’ emotional reactions? I have. Still do, but I'm improving.
In my quest to make more believable characters, I found The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide To Character Expression by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi invaluable. In this thin volume, you’ll discover descriptive reactions to convey some 75 emotions, everything from dread to skepticism.
The authors also run a website called http://writershelpingwriters.net that I've yet to thoroughly explore but plan to in the future. The site does contain some free resources worth checking out, such as an active verb list.
