Howdy,
Today, I will try out my new book review format for a single, slightly longer review. I've already used this format for my what I've been reading series, and I like it. Incidentally, I hosted a book blitz spot for Challenging Destiny a couple months ago, and I recently received a copy of the novel in exchange for a review. Without further ado...
Logan's and Ariana's interactions accurately portray the relationship between siblings and are the heart of the story.
Synopsis
Siblings Logan and Ariana are gifted with mysterious magical powers. Little do they know that they are central players in a supernatural power struggle.
My Thoughts
This novel is a slow burn that builds to an action-packed, high-stakes climax. Don't worry though, the book possesses a spritely pace and plenty of mystery to keep the reader interested. Right from the get-go, we learn Logan and Ariana possess mysterious powers. Readers don't know where the powers come from for most of the book, and neither do the siblings. More mystery is layered on top of this with the appearance of various enigmatic characters with hidden agendas. This all builds to an exciting climax followed by a denouement that nicely ties together the plot threads.
What really shines through is the relationship between the siblings. Logan's and Ariana's interactions accurately portray the relationship between siblings and are the heart of the story.
What can the aspiring author learn?
First off, Colyer really does a wonderful job portraying siblings––this is worth studying.
For me personally, I learned something about the paranormal romance genre. I haven't read much romance, and I don't know if I've read anything in this subgenre before. There's definitely an emphasis on romantic relationships in this novel, but it's not overwhelming. Challenging Destiny is an easy introduction to the subgenre with plenty of paranormal mystery and action to entertain just about anyone.
